Pheeeeweeee..... I think I caught the sea in a bad mood today.. She was
mean!....
First run was perfectly powered on the 5m, a little maxed out out the back,
but still good. The waves out the back were big and step, so I launched off
one into a HUGE jump that seemed to go on for ever, landed it OK staright
back onto the plane and then with the adrenalin still coursing through me
hit the next masive wave at top speed just as it was pretty much vertical
(I didn't have much choice really!) as I was already pretty mcu inverted as
I took off I decided to look over my back shoulder for a back loop. Made it
most of the way around, spotted my landing, saw the nose of my board hit
the water and continue rotating around, then there was a pretty big splash
as I hit the water, and the next thing I knew was that I was there in the
water holding on to my rig but my board had disappeared... Grrrrrr. Snapped
another UJ, second one already this year! Then realisedthat I had a massive
swim back (bigger Grrrrrr.) especially as I had to try to drag my rig back
as well.
I got rinsed over and over again on the swim back in, arms, legs, boom,
harness lines and masts all over the place! I did think about ditching the
rig a few times on the way back in, but decided I couldn't afford it so
persevered and eventually made it back to the beach down towards the
estuary. I relocated my board and then had a long walk back with the board
under one arm and trying to carry the rig with the other hand. I eventually
made it though.
Luckily I had another UJ, so it was straight back out onto the water. No
point holding back, so I went straight back out the back again with a few
lovely jumps on the way and then BANG I git smacked around the head by the
lip of a wave, I didn't even see it coming it justsmacked me in the side,
spinning my head around and winding me in the process...Off went my kit
again. Luckily this time I was right out beyond most of the breaking waves
so once I regained my senses I was able to get to my kit fairly esily and
start sailing back to shore. On the way back in, I was screaming down the
face of a wave when all of a sudden it just sucked me up and dumped me and
my kit into a boiling mess of whitewater. I seemed to get held under for
ages, something hard hit me in the ribs, but eventually I came back up
again, this time holding onto my kit. Made it back to the beach, shook
myself off and gave it another go!
I made a few runs this time without too many incidents although I did get
the board ripped out from under me at one point, and then on one other run
I got well and truly walloped again, so decided to stay in close and go for
some speed instead! Espeically as it was now beginning to get dark, so I
didn't fancy another big swim in the dark, even in close the knee high
waves were in a foul mood, a couple of them got the better of me a few
times.
I did manage to clock up 34.5 knots though and in a perverse kind of way
really enjoyed those rinsings too. I have got a bit of a headache now
though, my hands wee covered in blood when I got out (although I'm not sure
where from yet), and pretty much everything hurts at the moment.... I think
I need a lie down.
